What Are Keywords and Which Keywords Should I Use
What Are Keywords
Keywords is an extremely broad term that has many different meanings depending on the context it is being used in. The exact definition from dictionary.com is “a word that serves as a key, as to the meaning of another word, a sentence, passage, or the like.” Ok this is great but your first question is still what are keywords?
In internet marketing a keyword is a word or phrase that is used to describe your web-page. For example if you are talking about tents your keyword would be tents. It is very important to include keywords in your web-page content so that google and other search engines understand what your website and its internal web-pages are all about.
How google and other search engines work is they scan content in a web page and record the density of which words are used. For ex. If your page has 1000 words on it and the word tent is used 10 times then the word tents has a density of 1%. I would love to throw a magical number out and say that this is the percentage you should have but that is not available. The rule of thumb is that you should use a keyword as many times in your content as it can smoothly fit in. When you start to force keywords google can tell and will not like this and your viewers will not enjoy this either.
Try to use a keyword density analyzer tool such as those that are offered by SEO book to see which keywords are ranked the highest on your web-pages and make sure those are the keywords that you describe that page. Its best to use multiple keywords and long tail keywords in your content. Long tail keywords are keywords such as “tents that can survive the winters of your city.” This keyword has keywords that include “tents” “survive the winter” “your city” “survive the winter of your city” “tents that can survive the winters.” If you can incorporate long tail keywords this will help you pick up traffic on keywords that you may have not known are commonly searched.

If you are a local business you will want to change the target to your city or county and neighboring cities and counties as well. Then click on get ideas.
Once google comes back with results you will see how many times that keyword is searched a month on average, keywords similar to it, the competition level for that keyword in your target area and much more great info. Experiment with your findings to find the perfect keywords for your page. When deciding the keywords for your page don’t only look at the amount of views that it has.
