G Diminished Scale

G Diminished Scale

The Diminished scale is an eight note per octave scale made up of a series of whole steps and half steps. The Diminished scale is widely used in modern music and extensively in jazz and improvisation. The Diminished scale is unique in that every note can be considered a root for the diminished chord.

Example:

                             D# Gb Ab
C Diminished scale = C D Eb F F# G# A B
C Diminished 7th chord C Eb Gb A
D Diminished 7th chord D F Ab B
Eb Diminished 7th chord Eb Gb A C
F Diminished 7th chord F Ab B D
F# Diminished 7th chord F# A C D#
G# Diminished 7th chord G# B D F
A Diminished 7th chord A C Eb F#
B Diminished 7th chord B D F G#

All eight chords are made up of the same scale.

The diminished scale works very well and is widely used in jazz over altered Dominant chords especially dominant chords with a flat 7th degree present.

The C diminished scale we mentioned would work very well with any B7th altered chord.

Example:

B7th with the note C would would indicate a B7thb9 chord
B7th with the note D would would indicate a B7th#9 chord
B7th with the note Eb would would indicate a B7th chord
B7th with the note F would would indicate a B7th#11 chord
B7th with the note F# would would indicate a B7th chord
B7th with the note G# would would indicate a B13th chord
B7th with the note A would would indicate a B7 chord
B7th with the note B would would indicate a B7th chord
